The Emergency Medical Services Corps (EMS Corps) is currently accepting applications for the fall 2016 class.  The purpose of the program is to increase the number of underrepresented emergency medical technicians through youth development and job training. EMS Corps is a 5 month paid (stipend) program for young men between the ages of 18 to 26. EMS Corps students will be trained and educated through daily classes, tutoring, Life Coaching, mentorship support, physical fitness, and will also participate in professional and career development workshops.

free game-making fellowship program for girls* 14-18 to explore concepts in game development and design their own video games as they explore future careers as game makers. Participants learn basic design and code, storytelling concepts and character development, produce a portfolio, attend industry field trips and present their final work at Zynga. Only 15 spots available and daily lunch provided. The Regional Training Center is a Non- Profit Workforce Development Agency that prepares clients with the necessary skills to gain employment. We work in collaboration with the Peralta Community College District, Bay Area Business Roundtable as well as Alameda County Health Pipeline Partnership to provide our clients with essential training and resources to be successful.

 

The Medical Assistant/Administrative, Field Service Security & Alarms Technicians and Biotechnology programs is designed to provide students with the knowledge and competency in the Medical Assisting, Field Service Security & Alarms Technicians and Biotechnology field and gain Entry Level Employment once training is complete. Upon completion you will receive college credits and a California State Approved Certificate. The August Session for the Medical Assistant, Field Service Security & Alarms Technicians, Biotechnology Technicians Program last about  3-4 month beginning August and ending in December. In addition to completion of the program we work with you to seek employment with one of our industry collaborators. This training will present ways in which to engage in Trauma Informed Practices to support children, youth and families who may be exhibiting challenging behaviors stemming from the trauma from dealing with a mental health diagnosis and/or various environmental stressors. Participants will learn skills in trauma informed practices, how to resist retraumatization and how to address cultural/social barriers, as well as discuss ways to promote positive behavior options.

  • Examine triggers and de-escalation strategies for intervening in the traumatic response

Peggy Arevalo, MSW, LCSW earned her Bachelors of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology and her Masters degree in Social Work from San Francisco State University in 1993.  She has been teaching for California State East Bay for eight years, as well as at UC Davis Extension. She has taught in the undergraduate and graduate department in the areas of advance clinical practice, human behavior and social environment, field seminar and CYF micro/mezzo practice. She has also worked at Lucile Packard Children’s hospital/ Stanford Hospital as a pediatric oncology and emergency room social worker. She currently works as a medical social worker at community dialysis unit providing education and support to peritoneal dialysis patients.

In this training, we’ll take a look at current research about brain difference and how it impacts our everyday interactions with each other and with our clients. Doug Ronning is an LMFT and a Registered Drama Therapist/Board Certified Trainer with the North American Drama Therapy Association. In his San Francisco private practice he specializes in helping adolescents and adults with anxiety, OCD, substance abuse, and other compulsive disorders. He was formerly the Program Director for Ohlhoff Outpatient Programs in San Francisco. In addition to his work as a clinician, he is an Adjunct Professor in the Drama Therapy Program at the California Institute of Integral Studies.
Alicia Stephen is a MA graduate for of Drama Therapy Program from CIIS. She is a Drama Therapist and MFT Intern at the Living Arts Counseling Center. Here she works with Immigrant families, TPOC & QPOC with a focus on relationships, loss and love. She also specializes in supporting children and adults diagnozed with ADHD.

Clinical Supervision: Law and Ethics Issues

This course meets the Board of Behavioral Science (BBS) requirement for licensed clinicians to take a 6 hour course on Clinical Supervision in order to supervise MFT and psychology interns. It also meets the BBS requirement for licensed clinicians to take a 6 hour course on Law and Ethics every two years.
Clinical supervision of trainees and associates has a critical role in the development of mental health professionals. This course reviews the legal clinical supervision requirements  provided by the BBS (Board of Behavioral Sciences) and the BOP (Board of Psychology) for Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT), Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPPC) and Licensed Psychologists. The role of clinical supervisors as well as the foundations for developing an effective supervisory relationship are discussed.

Supervisory skills and competencies including case consultation and supervisee evaluation guidelines will be provided. Liability and legal issues will also be reviewed including standards of care, minor consent, confidentiality, and mandated reporting. Ethical best practices in client and supervisee situations will be discussed. Finally, ethical issues in the areas of self awareness and care will be reviewed including transference, counter-transference, secondary trauma, and self care techniques.
By the end of this course participants will be able to:
  • Identity the legal clinical supervision requirements with the BBS and BOP for LMFT, LCSW, LPPC Licensed Psychologist interns and associates.
  • Describe the knowledge, skills and competencies needed for providing clinical supervision.
  • Identify legal and ethical issues impacting clinical supervision including liability issues, mandated reporting, and ethical best practices.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills for supporting associates and trainees in addressing self awareness and self care issues related to their work.

Understanding and Supporting the Process of Grief and Loss in Children, Youth and Ourselves

Being separated from loved ones and being torn from home and everything familiar is devastating for children and youth. The resulting experiences of loss and grief are profound and lasting. Because children have no choices in this experience, the impact for them is more severe than that for the adults in similar events. The training is designed to increase understanding, awareness and strategies for caretakers and providers who will help the child process, cope and eventually integrate the overwhelming and persistent feelings they are struggling with. We have incorporated experiential exercises to build empathy and sensitivity in care providers.
Objectives
  • Learn the stages, triggers and reactions to grief in children and ourselves
  • Learn how to help others and ourselves manage and move through grief
  • Learn to honor grief as a natural process and healing as an ongoing process
  • Learn methods to promote phases of healing
The pursuing  grief forever shapes the internal working model and resultant behaviors for the child. Our role as caretakers and providers will be to help the child process, cope and eventually integrate the overwhelming and persistent feelings they are struggling with. The training also addresses the grief that surfaces for us as we help the youth along this painful journey.

Veteran’s Administration Medical Center.  She has served nine years as a Social Worker for Casey Family Programs. Beverly’s mission is to inspire understanding, empathy, capacity and determination for all who will help children and youth on the road to healing and a permanent place and people called home. This training will present ways in which to engage in Trauma Informed Practices to support children, youth and families who may be exhibiting challenging behaviors stemming from the trauma from dealing with a mental health diagnosis and/or various environmental stressors. Participants will learn skills in trauma informed practices, how to resist retraumatization and how to address cultural/social barriers, as well as discuss ways to promote positive behavior options.
  • Examine and discuss “difficult” behaviors
  • Enhance our capacities and skills to work across different cultures and diverse groups
  • Examine triggers and de-escalation strategies for intervening in the traumatic response
  • Explore strategies for supporting and connecting with challenging youth who may have a history of trauma

Peggy Arevalo, MSW, LCSW earned her Bachelors of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology and her Masters degree in Social Work from San Francisco State University in 1993.  She has been teaching for California State East Bay for eight years, as well as at UC Davis Extension. She has taught in the undergraduate and graduate department in the areas of advance clinical practice, human behavior and social environment, field seminar and CYF micro/mezzo practice. She has also worked at Lucile Packard Children’s hospital/ Stanford Hospital as a pediatric oncology and emergency room social worker. She currently works as a medical social worker at community dialysis unit providing education and support to peritoneal dialysis patients.

The Whole Brain Playground: Neurodiversity and Creative Strategies for Work with Children and Youth

Our brains are unique, and each of us experience the world very differently! In this training, we’ll take a look at current research about brain difference and how it impacts our everyday interactions with each other and with our clients. We’ll build empathy for difference and divergence while exploring the inner workings of people’s brain using creativity and play.
In this workshop participants will:
  • Examine the basic inner workings of the brain, including the unique processes of the brains of people with ADHD, anxiety & trauma.
  • Analyze Neurodiversity and Neurodivergence.
  • Examine how people’s brains react and interact with one another and how this shapes communication styles and relationships.
  • Engage in playful, creative and embodied methods to understand the inner workings of their own brain strengths and brain challenges.
  • Reflect on ways they may use their unique brain strengths and challenges while working with various clients.

Doug Ronning is an LMFT and a Registered Drama Therapist/Board Certified Trainer with the North American Drama Therapy Association. In his San Francisco private practice he specializes in helping adolescents and adults with anxiety, OCD, substance abuse, and other compulsive disorders. He was formerly the Program Director for Ohlhoff Outpatient Programs in San Francisco. In addition to his work as a clinician, he is an Adjunct Professor in the Drama Therapy Program at the California Institute of Integral Studies.
Alicia Stephen is a MA graduate for of Drama Therapy Program from CIIS. She is a Drama Therapist and MFT Intern at the Living Arts Counseling Center. Here she works with Immigrant families, TPOC & QPOC with a focus on relationships, loss and love. She also specializes in supporting children and adults diagnozed with ADHD.

Clinical Supervision: Law and Ethics Issues

This course meets the Board of Behavioral Science (BBS) requirement for licensed clinicians to take a 6 hour course on Clinical Supervision in order to supervise MFT and psychology interns. It also meets the BBS requirement for licensed clinicians to take a 6 hour course on Law and Ethics every two years.
Clinical supervision of trainees and associates has a critical role in the development of mental health professionals. This course reviews the legal clinical supervision requirements  provided by the BBS (Board of Behavioral Sciences) and the BOP (Board of Psychology) for Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT), Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPPC) and Licensed Psychologists. The role of clinical supervisors as well as the foundations for developing an effective supervisory relationship are discussed.

Supervisory skills and competencies including case consultation and supervisee evaluation guidelines will be provided. Liability and legal issues will also be reviewed including standards of care, minor consent, confidentiality, and mandated reporting. Ethical best practices in client and supervisee situations will be discussed. Finally, ethical issues in the areas of self awareness and care will be reviewed including transference, counter-transference, secondary trauma, and self care techniques.
By the end of this course participants will be able to:
  • Identity the legal clinical supervision requirements with the BBS and BOP for LMFT, LCSW, LPPC Licensed Psychologist interns and associates.
  • Describe the knowledge, skills and competencies needed for providing clinical supervision.
  • Identify legal and ethical issues impacting clinical supervision including liability issues, mandated reporting, and ethical best practices.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills for supporting associates and trainees in addressing self awareness and self care issues related to their work.

Mr. Gibson currently has a private practice in San Francisco and provides clinical supervision to mental health professionals and child welfare workers seeking licensure.

Motivational interviewing is a directive, client-centered counseling style for eliciting behavior change by helping clients to explore and resolve the ambivalence that keeps people from making desired change in their lives.
This training will teach you how to help your clients to develop motivation to change problem behaviors (e.g. substance abuse/dependence, diet, exercise, and smoking). Motivational interviewing is a client-centered, directive method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence.
Strengthen your ability to motivate your clients to make and maintain positive changes. You will become familiar with the spirit, principles and basic techniques of MI. Through interactive exercises, role-play, practice, video, and case examples, you will learn to apply MI more flexibly and effectively and to make MI a more natural and integrated part of your clinical practice.

Understanding and Supporting the Process of Grief and Loss in Children, Youth and Ourselves

Being separated from loved ones and being torn from home and everything familiar is devastating for children and youth. The resulting experiences of loss and grief are profound and lasting. Because children have no choices in this experience, the impact for them is more severe than that for the adults in similar events. The training is designed to increase understanding, awareness and strategies for caretakers and providers who will help the child process, cope and eventually integrate the overwhelming and persistent feelings they are struggling with. We have incorporated experiential exercises to build empathy and sensitivity in care providers.
Objectives
  • Learn the stages, triggers and reactions to grief in children and ourselves
  • Learn how to help others and ourselves manage and move through grief
  • Learn to honor grief as a natural process and healing as an ongoing process
  • Learn methods to promote phases of healing
The pursuing  grief forever shapes the internal working model and resultant behaviors for the child. Our role as caretakers and providers will be to help the child process, cope and eventually integrate the overwhelming and persistent feelings they are struggling with. The training also addresses the grief that surfaces for us as we help the youth along this painful journey.

Beverly has been a Public Speaker and Educator for more than 30 years with specialties in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder; the Trauma Impact on Brain Development and Learning in Children and Youth, and Compassion Fatigue, AKA Vicarious Trauma. Beverly has served as the EAP Employee Assistance Program Coordinator, and the Assistant Chief of Social Work Service, Bronx N.Y. Veteran’s Administration Medical Center.  She has served nine years as a Social Worker for Casey Family Programs. Beverly’s mission is to inspire understanding, empathy, capacity and determination for all who will help children and youth on the road to healing and a permanent place and people called home. Roles in her career include being  a Trainer for Seneca Center and Family Finding,  Readjustment Counseling Therapist, Psychiatric Social Worker, Social Work Field Placement Supervisor; Clinical Social Worker/ Program Coordinator/ Social Work Supervisor; Assistant Chief of Social Worker Service and Grief and Trauma Counselor and Consultant. Beverly’s participatory training style creates an interactive and collaborative learning environment focused towards seeking answers.
