To SFUSD Community Partners:
Even though the 2015-2016 school year is just beginning, SFUSD is planning to begin the enrollment cycle for the 2016-2017 school year that will be launched on Saturday, October 24, at the Public Schools Enrollment Fair at City College of San Francisco. Families with entering Kindergarten and transitioning students in 5th and 8th grade will be able to apply for schools beginning October 26th of this year.
Because SFUSD student enrollment is a choice, rather than a neighborhood, system, parents may choose from all schools in the city. Our goal is to encourage all families to participate in the first round of assignments in order to maximize their opportunities to receive an offer of an assignment to their school of choice. We are especially focused on increasing awareness and participation of families of students who are historically underserved.
Fostering awareness in the assignment process requires understanding the key milestones as well as some of the considerations in choosing schools. For example, we need families to understand that:
- in addition to offering Kindergarten, SFUSD is also offering Transitional Kindergarten for those students who will turn 5 in September, October or November of 2016
- students who are in the 5th grade must apply for middle school placement, but will have a better opportunity to receive an assignment to their middle school feeder school if they choose it
- students who speak a language other than English will have an opportunity to receive additional support and resources through language program offerings
- Special Education services is being expanded to more schools and students who receive services need to be able to apply for schools that provide the appropriate services as identified in their Individualized Education Plan
In order to effectively reach and communicate with families, we hope to continue to build strong partnerships with community-based organizations that can assist SFUSD in communicating and reaching out to families and increase participation.
We will have a partners informational and training meeting on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. in the Board of Education meeting room at 555 Franklin Street. We hope that you or a representative from your organization can attend.
Please RSVP by contacting Norma Devlin, at the Educational Placement Center at 241-6271 or at DevlinN@sfusd.edu. We will also be offering other Enrollment Workshops to the public that your staff may also attend, including Early Bird Workshops that will be conducted prior to the Enrollment Fair. I have attached a copy of the Enrollment Fair posters with key dates.
Additionally, we are hoping to capture families at Head Starts and other community-based pre-school sites, so please pass this information on to any interested organizations.
If you are interested in having staff from the District’s Educational Placement Center come to a parent meeting to talk to parents or staff about the enrollment process, please contact us to schedule a time. We have staff who can present in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Italian and Russian. Please indicate the languages needed when scheduling a time at the contact indicated above. Because District resources are extremely limited, we can only send staff out to address groups of at least 15-20 parents or staff.
Thank you and we look forward to working with you.
