The Nonprofit Displacement Mitigation Program provides technical and financial assistance to support nonprofits facing displacement or lease renewals at substantially higher rates amidst a volatile real estate market. 
 
In April 2015 NCCLF announced the first round of grant recipients, which included eleven social service and five art nonprofits. These awards, totaling more than $1 million, will help these nonprofits remain in the area and continue to serve residents struggling with a wide-range of socioeconomic disparities.

If your nonprofit organization is facing a rent increase or displacement, you  may be eligible for technical or financial assistance through the City and County of San Francisco’s Nonprofit Displacement Mitigation Fund.Nonprofits in the program have benefited from lease extensions and negotiations, short-term rental subsidies and tenant improvement funds, and are often among the first to hear about new below-market real estate opportunities: http://www.ncclf.org/npdmitigation/

 

Related, in response to the recommendations of the Nonprofit Displacement Working Group, the Mayor’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development brought on a Nonprofit Business Development Manager, Lex Leifheit. Lex is connecting nonprofits to technical assistance and financing resources such as the Nonprofit Displacement Mitigation Fund provided by the City and partner providers as well as private industry professionals.  Additionally, Lex is working with the City and nonprofit partners to develop and promote new tools and resources to assist with nonprofit real estate challenges; support the development of best practices and other educational efforts to expand space sharing, co-working and co-location of SF-based nonprofits.

The Youth Empowerment Fund (YEF) is committed to the leadership of young people by providing them with resources to define their own programming, practice leadership, and to bring sustainable community change. We know that this requires adult allies to have the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary for meaningful youth leadership to flourish.

 

We have partnered with Movement Strategy Center to provide workshops that aim to educate and support adult allies learn how to better engage youth develop their own voices, their own solutions to community issues, and lead meaningful actions that create real impact. This training is the first in a series of workshops on the topic of youth organizing tools for empowerment.

 

Theater of the Oppressed for Educators (2 Part Series) PART 1 – Image Theater

Theater of the Oppressed for Educators PART 1 – Image Theater

An experiential workshop in tools from Theater of the Oppressed you can use with young people with a focus on Image Theater. Learn interactive, collaborative and reflective approaches to critical theater-based practice that supports people in identifying their personal and shared issues – and what can be done to transform them.

There will be an optional brown bag lunch after the workshop to discuss various ways of integrating TO practices into the work that you are already doing.

 

What is Theater of the Oppressed?

Theater of the Oppressed is an arsenal of theater techniques and games that seeks to humanize people, and create space for participants to rehearse taking action. It begins with the idea that everyone has the capacity to act in the “theater” of our lives; everybody is at once an actor and a spectator. We are all spect-actors!

 

It was created by Augusto Boal in practice over the last 40 years. In the 1970’s his Arena Theater company in Brazil realized that they should not use theater to teach workers about their problems and pose solutions for them (as most agit-prop theater seeks to do)  – but instead use theater as a space for people to deconstruct problems and rehearse for taking action. Boal drew inspiration from Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Liberation Theology, and practice in multiple countries around the world while in exile.

There are many theater forms that constitute Theater of the Oppressed. The two that we will focus on in this series are:

 

Image Theater invites spect-actors to form a group of statues to create a moment in time dramatizing an oppressive situation. The image then becomes a source of critical reflection facilitated by various kinds of interventions. For example, the spect-actors can show the ideal image and the transition images required to reach it, or can reshape an image to show different perspectives.

 

Forum Theater is a short play about a situation of oppression which ends poorly for the protagonist(s). After an initial performance, it is shown again, however this time the spectators become spect-actors and can at any point yell “freeze” and replace the protagonist(s) in an attempt to transform the situation and rehearse for real action.

Name Games, Icebreakers & Transitions: Pre-emptive Behavior Management

The best behavior management strategy is to pre-empt issues by building community and establishing practices for group management. In this fast-moving training participants will learn a variety of name-games and icebreakers designed to deepen connections and build strong relationships. As participants build strong intra-group connections inclusion goes up, and bullying goes down. Because transitions are often moments that cause behavior challenges, we offer several games to make transitions both fun and conflict-free. Through these simple activities you will learn to reinforce the high expectation that all youth are an integral part of your community and are capable of showing up for one another.

 

In this workshop participants will:

  • Learn fresh new energetic games to use with youth to build community and relationships
  • Practice using “back-pocket” activities as a strategy to manage group dynamics
  • Identify behavioral cues to diagnose distracting youth behavior, meet their needs and redirect their energy

 

This training is ideal for:

  • Program leaders or line staff who work directly with youth K-12
  • Coordinators or Directors who oversee afterschool programs
  • Administrators who want to understand how youth development is described and evaluated through the QSA

Youth Development 101: Strategies to Embed Youth Development

The youth development field is filled with passionate practitioners. But how do we combine passion with precision? The Youth Development framework offers a clear definition of healthy, productive adulthood. Clarifying these outcomes for young people can bring high quality youth development practices into sharper focus. In this workshop participants will learn ways to integrate research-based techniques into their work through facilitation, experiential curriculum, and relationship building strategies. This workshop is aligned to section 6 of the QSA.

 

In this workshop participants will:

  • Learn the components of the Youth Development Framework
  • Understand how to design programs to incorporate the supports and opportunities youth need to transition into healthy, productive adulthood
  • Use group development theory to tailor adult presence and integrate fading facilitation
  • Analyze “social resource” amongst youth participants to create inclusion and combat cliques, bullying, and isolating group dynamics
  • Receive curriculum for elementary, middle or high school youth to connect youth development theory to hands-on experiential strategies.
