INTRODUCTION

The current position is located at General Services Agency, Department of Public Works, Bureau of Street & Sewer Repair/Urban Forestry.

Appointment Type: Temporary Provisional. Provisional appointments may not exceed three (3) years. In order to be considered for a permanent appointment, incumbent will be required to successfully compete in a Civil Service Examination.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Under general direction, performs skilled work in the placing and finishing of concrete on public or private property, and related duties as required.  Essential functions of this job code include: ensuring that job site work is covered and barricaded; using various tools and equipment to perform concrete work; pouring and finishing concrete, using screeds, trowels, and floats; breaking out damaged concrete using pneumatic jackhammer equipment, and carrying and loading it into a dump truck; setting screeds and forms for concrete work; mixing and applying concrete, topping, colors, grits, epoxy, or waterproofing compounds; operating a motor vehicle to travel and transport materials to job sites; laying out work for new construction or repair of concrete sidewalks, curbs, gutters, streets, and stairs; preparing job sites by setting up safety tripods, scaffolding, or A-frame barricades; and using a two-way radio.

 

Nature of Work: This work involves exposure to inclement weather; working overtime, and on weekends and holidays or on rotating shifts; may require work at a sewage treatment plant; and requires the physical strength and agility necessary to: stoop and bend the knees and back, kneel or squat, lift objects that weigh up to 90 pounds and carry them a distance of 50 feet, climb ladders, and remain in uncomfortable positions for extended periods.  No work is scheduled during severe rainy weather at the supervisor’s discretion.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification.  Please note, additional/alternative qualifications (i.e., special conditions) may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the exam/job announcement.

Experience and Training

  1. Completion of the City’s apprenticeship program in class 7398 Apprentice Cement Mason I and in class 7399 Apprentice Cement Mason II with the City and County of San Francisco, as evidenced by the issuance of a Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship under the authority of the California Apprenticeship Council, by the time of appointment, OR
  2. Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program, as evidenced by issuance of a Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship under the authority of the California Apprenticeship Council and two (2) years of experience as a journey level cement mason, by the time of appointment.  AND
  3. Possession and maintenance of a valid driver license (Class C).

Substitution

Five years of additional verifiable cement masonry experience may substitute for the required recognized apprenticeship program under paragraph II. Qualifying experience can be substituted for an apprenticeship on a year-for-year basis.

VERIFICATION:

ALL applicants must submit verification of qualifying experience and training.  Verification of qualifying experience must be submitted on the employer’s letterhead and must state the name of the applicant, job title(s), job duties, dates of service (mm/dd/yy) and must be signed by employer or employer’s authorized representative.
