INTRODUCTION

The current position is located at General Services Agency, Department of Public Works, Bureau of Street & Sewer Repair. 

 

Appointment Type: Temporary- Exempt Full-Time. The position is a backfill for a current employee who is on leave. The duration of the assignment is not known, but shall not exceed 2 years. In order to be considered for a permanent appointment, incumbent will be required to successfully compete in a Civil Service Examination.

 

Under supervision, spreads, rakes and finishes asphalt mixtures in connection with street maintenance and repair projects. Essential duties include: spreading and raking asphaltic mixtures; cleaning cut-outs and preparing sub-grades before paving; operating asphalt kettle, tool heater, air compressors, and other pneumatic tools such as jackhammers, vibrating compactors and walk behind asphalt rollers; assisting in the clean-up of job site after asphaltic repairs; may operate the screed on an asphalt paver; may be the groundsman on an asphalt milling machine; setting up job-sites (including cones, barricades, high-rises and signs) in a safe manner and performing related duties as required.

The nature of the work requires considerable physical effort in handling heavy asphalt mixtures and finishing tools up to 90 pounds; may be exposed to working conditions where moderately serious injuries may occur and somewhat disagreeable weather conditions due to heat and fumes are encountered; and working nights, weekends, holidays and mandatory overtime.

 

Example of Important and Essential Duties:

1. Spreads and rakes asphaltic mixtures.

2. Finish roadway with vibrating plate, compactor, roller or similar equipment to obtain a compact and smooth surface.

3. Cleans cut-outs and prepares sub-grades before paving.

4. Assists in clean-up of job site after asphaltic repairs.

5. Sets up job site (including cones, barricades, highrises and signs) in a safe manner.

6. Completes standard job reports.

7. May operate the screed on an asphalt paver.

8. May be the groundsman on an asphalt milling machine.

9. May operate asphalt kettle and tool heater.

10. Jack hammering and demolish roadway with jack hammer, bobcat or similar equipment.

11. Prepare and compact subbase suitable for asphalt paving and patches.

12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

13. Assigned as crew lead as needed by Department.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Two years of verifiable experience in street paving and repair work as an asphalt worker (Letter of verification must be submitted with application: See Verification section below for details)AND

2. Possession of a valid California Driver’s License (Copy of driver’s license must be submit with application)
