Aug/23/2014 Peace in the Park, Aug. 23

Posted by cwilliams • August 23rd, 2014

Peace in the Park festival brings together the diverse San Francisco and surrounding communities to unplug and explore activities of peace and happiness in a fun, inspiring and healthy atmosphere. The festival was created in response to the growing concern – we are an overly stimulated, ADD-afflicted and tech-saturated culture. After the success the first time (2013) with over 2,000 people from all over the Bay Area in attendance, and rave reviews from sponsorsperformers and partners, the community has called for it to become an annual event.

On August 23rd, the 2nd annual festival will feature world music and visual artists; tai chi, hatha yoga; life-changer seminars, arts, crafts, exhibits by local non-profits and meditation experience. At the majestic Bandshell of Golden Gate Park, this event will demonstrate how to nurture peace and happiness even while living in a fast-paced urban environment. You’ll be among some of the best artists, scientists, peace makers and policy makers in the Bay Area at this event. The festival is offered free of charge by a coalition including Brahma Kumaris, Institute of Noetic Sciences, Stanford University CCARE, Interfaith Center at the Presidio, United Religions Initiative, ServiceSpace and Yoga Tree of SF. More information at www.PeaceInTheParkSF.org. Here’s a 2-min video from last year to give you a glimpse into the spirit of the festival.

Please also see the attachment which has some more information as well and SHARE this with your network, friends, and family.

Aug/21/2014 Buchanan YMCA: Youth & Government

Posted by cwilliams • August 21st, 2014

Hello,
I am sharing some information about another of Buchanan’s larger programs for High School students, Youth & Government.
Youth & Government – Model Legislature & Court Program

The Model Legislature & Court program is a youth leadership and civic engagement program that has existed in California since 1948. In this program, youth engage in “hands-on” learning including travelling to four conferences. The program ends with a culminating trip to Sacramento where the youth takeover the state capitol and enact their version of State government. For more information please click here: http://calymca.org/programs/model-legislature-court/

In 2013-2014, SFY/Buchanan was elected to its third consecutive “Delegation of Distinction” honor, we advocated for fructose awareness in the Western Addition, and we performed various community service acts around the Western Addition. We are excited for an even stronger year filled with personal growth, community advocacy and service, and greater statewide recognition.

In 2014-15, our delegation goal this year is to grow our program, reach a greater scope of San Franciscan youth, and create sustainable strategies that will advance our program success for years to come. We would like to invite you and any interested youth to our upcoming events:

RECRUITMENT/INFO MEETING: Wednesday, August 27, 2014 from 4-5PM at Buchanan

FIRST WEEKLY MEETING: Wednesday, September 3, 2014 from 6-8PM at Buchanan: This is our meeting kick-off. Bring potential delegates to these meetings so they can participate in weekly meetings.

5TH TEEN LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE: Friday, September 19th to Sunday, September 21, 2014 at Camp Jones Gulch: This is the first conference of the year. It is hosted by the YMCA of San Francisco at their residential camp in La Honda, California and is a great way to meet other SFY delegates and advisors as well as delegates from around the Bay Area (Silicon Valley, East Bay, etc.). Returning delegates that have completed their Y&G Registration process through Buchanan can attend TLC for free.

I’ve attached the following documents for your review (all documents can be found at Buchanan’s membership desk:
  • Program Timeline
  • 2014-15 Registration Packet
  • 2014 Teen Leadership Conference Registration Packet
If you have any questions please contact Jeff Lincoln at jlincoln@ymcasf.net.  Please also share this information with anyone that may be interested.
