Exempt employees are considered “at will” and serve at the discretion of the appointing officer. In order to be considered for a permanent appointment, temporary incumbents will be required to successfully compete in a Civil Service Examination.
Position Description:  Under direction of sworn or supervising civilian personnel of the Sheriff’s Department, the Sheriff’s Cadet assists in maintaining building and area security and performs non-law enforcement duties at the Sheriff’s Department and other assigned offices and facilities in San Francisco and San Bruno.  Essential functions of the class vary depending on assignment and include, but are not limited to, the following:  Monitoring walk-through metal detectors and video surveillance equipment in public building security assignments; operating hand-held metal detectors; searching handbags, briefcases, backpacks, and other containers; providing directions and other information to persons entering public buildings under Sheriff’s Department control; providing first aid; answering telephone, routing calls, and taking messages; typing and filing correspondence, records, and other forms; ordering office supplies and materials and taking responsibility for maintaining an orderly inventory of daily office needs; operating a computer workstation; filing and recording records; sorting and distributing mail; performing clerical support duties; and performing related non-law enforcement duties as assigned.
Background investigation clearance and is required prior to appointment and for the duration of this position. In addition, candidates must pass a physical examination administered by the department physician prior to appointment.
Working Hours:
Full-Time Employees:  Full-time appointees work 40 hours per week.  Appointees may be assigned to any shift of eight consecutive hours, eight and a half hours (with half hour meal break) or nine hours (with 1-hour meal break) within a 24-hour period, seven days per week.  Appointees may be required to regularly work weekends and/or holidays.  Appointees may be required to rotate assignments and must be available to work overtime as needed.
Part-Time Employees:  Part-time appointees may be assigned to any shift within a 24-hour period, seven days per week, and may be required to regularly work weekends and/or holidays.  Appointees may be required to rotate assignments.


Applicants must meet all of the following requirements as 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 29, 2013:
1.     Eighteen (18) years of age at the time of application; AND
2.     Possession of a U.S. high school diploma or its equivalent (G.E.D. or California high school proficiency certification); AND
3.     One (1) year [2,080 hours] of verifiable work experience; AND
4.     Possession of a valid state Driver License at the time of application and a current history of responsible motor vehicle operation.

Candidates who meet the Minimum Qualifications must complete an Oral Interview before continuing on to the background investigation.  Only candidates who complete and pass the oral interview, background investigation and physical examination will be considered eligible for hire.


As part of the selection process an image of your fingerprints will be captured and sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction (or arrest, in limited circumstances) history will disqualify you as a candidate based on the specific requirements of the position to which you are applying. If selected for fingerprinting, the hiring department will contact you to schedule an appointment.

Candidates applying for positions with the Unified School District and the Community College District may be disqualified from consideration should their conviction history not meet the standards established under the California Education Code.

Candidates applying for positions with the Recreation and Park Department may be disqualified from consideration should their conviction history not meet the standards established under California Public Resources Code 5164.
