RE: Capitol Briefing– Boys & Young Men of Color
The California Program on Access to Care (CPAC) (at UC Berkeley, School of Public Health) is convening a Capitol Briefing entitled: The Challenge of Youth Violence: State Policies and Local Actions. The Latino Coalition for a Healthy California and the Children’s Defense Fund are co-sponsoring this event as part of our joint efforts in conjunction with the Alliance for Boys and Men of Color Health Workgroup. This briefing will be held on Wednesday, September 25thfrom 10am to 12:30pm at the State Capitol. The room has not yet been finalized.
This briefing is intended to provide policy and program information to support the efforts to reduce violence among youth and young men in our California communities by the State Legislature, key health and social service agencies, the advocate groups calling for reforms at the state and local level, and local community leaders addressing youth violence in their own areas. It is our intent that this session is also seen as supportive of the efforts of the Select Committee on the Status of Boys and Men of Color, and The California Endowment’s Initiative on Boys and Men of Color (which has provided support to CPAC on these matters).
The briefing will include as the lead keynote speaker: Guillermo Cespedes, Deputy Mayor on Gang Reduction and Youth Development, City of Los Angeles.
A partial list of other Briefing participants includes:
Christopher Covington, Community Organizer, Khmer In Action (Long Beach)
Jamila Edwards, Northern California Director, Children’s Defense Fund
Ruben Lizardo, Deputy Director, PolicyLink (Oakland)
Xavier Morales, PhD, Executive Director, Latino Coalition for a Healthy California, and
