Cultural Worker-in-Residence Program SOUL Summer School 2013 :: June 16-August 9
San Francisco Bay Area

Applications due Monday, April 8.
Apply online

Culture is one of our communities’ most powerful weapons in the fight for liberation. It can channel anger and despair into collective resistance, raise consciousness and fuel our senses to envision the world we want and the movement we must build. We need cultural workers who are trained and ready to go beyond individual inspiration to be a strategic part of changing the system. We believe that when cultural workers are both skilled in their craft, and versed in the art and science of organizing, they are poised to make strong contributions,  inspiring others to action and reflection and building people’s power.

The SOUL Summer Cultural Worker-in-Residence Program is an 8-week practical exploration of the intersections of cultural work and community organizing for social justice. Through this residency, you will participate in political education and organizing skills trainings at SOUL, and have the opportunity to work with a local community-based organization, contributing to ongoing organizing work and making art rooted in collective struggles for justice. This pilot program is designed for cultural workers in the visual, performing and literary arts with at least one year of consistent art practice and a demonstrated commitment to the social justice movement. SOUL prioritizes building the leadership of oppressed communities, especially young women, young people of color, working class, and/or queer people.

SOUL Summer School is a full-time commitment based in Oakland, CA. Participants can expect to spend 10 hours a week in political education and skills trainings, and at least 30 hours contributing to local organizing efforts through art practice and engaging in on the ground work at community-based organizations. You will not have time for another job or summer classes. SOUL will provide a need-based stipend-up to $2000-for expenses during the summer.

You can fill out an application here, which will also ask for you to submit a creative work sample. If you have any questions, please email us at
