Youth Employment Services (YES) Program Coordinator

JOB SUMMARY: This position is under the direct supervision of the Director of Youth and Employment Programs. The YES Program Coordinator empowers at-risk youth and young adults ages 16-24 to access employment through intensive job readiness and job development services. The YES Program Coordinator assists with YES youth intakes, outreach efforts, food pantry support, and job readiness trainings at Excelsior Community Center in San Francisco. In addition, s/he will provide program support to the Director of Youth and Employment Programs. This is a part-time non-exempt position.

The Organization: Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center (BHNC) is a non-profit community based multi-program agency founded in 1978. Our mission is “…to preserve and enhance the ethnic, cultural, and economic diversity of Bernal Heights and surrounding neighborhoods. We promote community action to build a just and equitable community for all BHNC focuses on the needs of people with low and moderate incomes. We accomplish our mission by:

Developing affordable housing throughout San Francisco;

Providing linguistically and culturally responsive services to our community’s most vulnerable adults, seniors, youth, and their families;

Developing leaders; organizing and empowering our tenants, clients, members, and allies to advocate for their needs and for the needs of the community.”

BHNC has five key program areas to meet this mission: Affordable Housing Development and Rehabilitation, Senior Programs, Employment Programs, Youth Programs, and Community Organizing.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES (20 Hours Per Week):

Work one-on-one with youth towards the achievement of the goals stated in their Individual Service Plans (ISPs) and monitor client progress towards employment and education by coaching youth in the skills necessary for employment (resume writing, interviewing etc.) Assist with the editing of youth resumes, cover letters, and applications

Conduct job readiness trainings at Downtown High School weekly and schools as assigned Collaborate with key community and school partners, including coordination of youth progress and placement status, strategic planning meetings, and other meetings as assigned

Facilitate YES Workshops, conduct intakes to drop-in clients and provide support to youth and staff in the Food Pantry at BHNC’s Excelsior Community Center

Conduct outreach to local schools and partner community based organizations, send reminder texts and calls to youth participating in job readiness workshops and follow up with all youth emails/calls to schedule new participant intakes and orientations

Provide support to Director of Youth and Employment Programs in the coordination of two annual events, Fast Access and BHNC’s Career Fair

Track and record client progress in Salesforce.com and maintain orderly and updated files for each youth

Assist with the supervision of MYEEP interns throughout the year

Assist with the facilitation, logistics and curriculum development of Camp Hire

Assist in the ongoing development of YES and Food Pantry workshop curricula

Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED BY THE JOB:

Excellent verbal, written and facilitation skills

Ability and willingness to travel frequently from various school and community partner sites across San Francisco

Ability to interact with and positively engage people of various social, ethnic, cultural, linguistic, religious, economic

and educational backgrounds

Enthusiasm for leadership development and community organizing in a mixed income, multi-racial, multi-ethnic community

Strong organizational skills with attention to detail, consistently able to follow through and handle multiple priorities simultaneously

Experience or desire to learn data entry into DCYF’s Contract Management System (CMS)

Demonstrated strong interest in non-profit work through volunteer or employment experience

Microsoft Office proficient (Word, Excel), internet savvy and able to set up web-based list services, such as Yahoo or Google

Minimum of 1 year working with disadvantaged youth

Knowledge of labor market/youth workforce development

Familiar with the southeast section (Excelsior, Mission, Bayview) of San Francisco

Ability to lift up to 30 lbs

Bilingual in English and and Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish a plus

Must be TB tested and background screened
