Extreme poverty is a complex, multifaceted issue. One aspect of
extreme poverty identified by the UN that is both treatable and preventable, however, is malaria. Malaria is a risk to half the world’s population. 1,800 deaths occur every day from malaria, and sadly, 86% of those deaths are children under 5. Due to this reality, San Francisco is focusing on malaria this year as the cause for which the Walk’s international funds will be donated.
25% of funds raised are designated to a local project, and these will go to
the SFIC’s Winter Interfaith Shelter to tackle hunger and homelessness in
The project to which the Walk’s international aid funds(usually given to unspecified poverty projects at large) will be donated is Faiths Act in Sierra Leone – an interfaith, grassroots, malaria-prevention program. You can join San Francisco’s efforts this year by having sponsors write the code “TBFF” next to each individual donation on a written sponsor envelope, or by typing them as the “Alternate Agency” under the registration site’s additional information category.
