Coleman Advocates is a member-led, multi-racial community organization working to create a city of hope, justice and opportunity for all children and all families in San Francisco. Parents Making a Change (PMAC) organizes parents in SF public elementary schools to build the power of parents and students to make change in their schools, in their communities and in their own lives. We are a fast-paced, yet family-oriented, social justice organization, with long but flexible hours. Our community center is filled with children and families representing the racial diversity of southeast SF. PARENTS MAKING A CHANGE — PMAC is the parent organizing project of Coleman Advocates for Children and Youth. Led by African American, Latino and Pacific Islander parents, PMAC parents organize on their school campuses and in the community. PMAC leaders have won campaigns to improve the conditions of public schools and expand the resources available for low-income and working class families in SF. PMAC leaders run school-site campaigns and with Coleman youth, lead citywide campaigns around quality education, city funding for youth, jobs and affordable housing. PMAC organizes in several elementary schools in San Francisco, but we are specifically hiring an organizer to work with our Black parent members and leaders in Bayview schools and communities.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: • Recruit and retain a membership base of Black parents at target elementary schools in Bayview. • Build the leadership and skills of parent members and leaders through workshops, one-on-ones, and campaign activities. • Support parent leadership in citywide Coleman campaigns, including annual electoral organizing and city budget advocacy. • Continue to build Coleman’s commitment to organizing Black families in San Francisco, though the Black Family Organizing Committee. • Specific organizing roles include: identifying parent leaders, conducting weekly one on ones, phone banking, supporting parent leaders to run weekly parent membership and parent leader meetings, providing leadership development workshops (organizing skills, personal development, and political education), supporting parents in shaping school-site campaign plans, supporting parent leaders to take action, meet with public officials, etc. • At times this job will require long hours, including working early mornings, late nights and weekends. Primary qualifications – we are seeking experienced organizers: • A minimum of 2 years experience as an organizer in a membership organization, ideally with direct parent organizing experience. • Or these alternatives: 1) a combination of community organizing & leadership development, advocacy or direct services experience; 2) a combination of leadership development, direct services or advocacy experience with low income people of color and progressive/social justice activism experience. • At least 1 year of experience supporting parent of color’s leadership — either as staff or as a highly responsible volunteer. Ideally, experience specifically with low-income and working class Black parents. Other qualifications: • Energetic, outgoing, and able to easily approach parents or school staff to build relationships • A strong desire to build the leadership of parents and students of color in SF public schools, especially in Bayview • A commitment to improving the lives of poor and working class families of color, and to racial and economic justice • Able to communicate effectively orally and in writing. • Self motivated, with a demonstrated record of successfully achieving goals and being accountable to results • Well organized • Ability to attend night and weekend activities as needed • A current Driver’s license Preferred (but not required) skills, qualities and experience: • Knowledge of education policy/school reform issues from a racial justice perspective • Owns/has access to a car • Is from or has deep knowledge of San Francisco, particularly Bayview We are an affirmative action employer.
