Celebrating The 61th Annual San Francisco Juneteenth Festival
Saturday, June 18, 2011 marks the 61th Annual San Francisco Juneteenth Festival, the largest gathering of African-Americans in northern California. It is a popular event among the more than 440,000 black households in the Bay Area because of its historical significance to the community. This year the event returms to the Fillmore with a Parade beginning at Civic Center Plaza June 18 @ 11am, Health Fair. Classic Car and Motorcycle show, Petting Zoo, Pony Rides, 3 on 3 Basketball, Skate park, Games2u, and of course live entertainment, food vendors, Arts & Craft Vendors, and Community Information booths.
The mission of The San Francisco Juneteenth Committee Inc. is to continue the historical tradition of our ancestors by celebrating this holiday through education, recreational and entertainment events targeting both the African American community and the general public focusing on youth and families in the San Francisco Bay Area, and the greater Northern California regions. The San Francisco Juneteenth celebration is a multi-cultural event drawing attendees not only from local African-Americans, but all San Francisco citizens and ethnic groups. In addition, San Francisco city tour bus operators make stops at the festival bringing national and international attendees. Festival brochures are placed at the San Francisco Visitors Center. The San Francisco Juneteenth Committee maintains an office at the African American Art and Culture complex @ 762 Fulton Street that serves as administrative space and distributes SF Juneteenth year-round events information.
The “Back on the Block” theme will increase the knowledge of all Juneteenth festival attendees and website visitors about the rich past and ongoing contributions and prominence of San Francisco’s African American citizens and institutions in economic, educational and civic activities.
