What’s Up in The Fillmore?

Congratulations! … “Laissez les Bons Temps Roulez!”

Congratulations to the successful grantees of the second cycle of the Fillmore Events & Promotions Mini Grant Program! Twelve events received grants of varying sizes to help produce and promote a diverse group of events (scheduled between May – October 2011) – all focused on bringing additional foot traffic and attention to the Fillmore commercial corridor. Each of these events will work with Fillmore merchants to maximize the potential of the additional foot traffic generated around their event.

Events Committee … Get Involved!

The Events Committee will serve as a volunteer committee to assist those event producers who would like help in the planning and execution of their event. This might include: soliciting sponsorship, developing and distributing promotional materials, soliciting merchant participation, assembling volunteers to assist in staffing events, setting up and breaking down, decorating, and handling correspondence for the event… in general, helping to do what needs to be done …

Thinking of leasing space or starting a business located on The Fillmore?

At the last Fillmore Community Forum on March 21st OEWD convened a Business Development Panel designed to assist new and existing businesses with preparing for, identifying, negotiating, and securing retail space on the Fillmore corridor. Panelists included Regina Dick-Endrizzi, Executive Director of the Office of Small Business, Grant Guidinger, Cushman Wakefield, and Helen Branham, Urban Solutions. Presenters gave advice on how best to present your business idea, and learnt what landlords and real estate brokers look for when leasing a space. The Fillmore Awning & Signage Program

We received 28 applications for our Fillmore Awning & Signage Program … from businesses located between McAllister and Post. Requests ranged from new floors and interior lighting to café tables and chairs for outdoor seating and blade signs to offer more distinctive signage for businesses on the corridor. OEWD is currently working to determine how much can be accomplished with our budget of $130,000. We hope to ‘touch’ as many businesses in the corridor as possible by doing power washing of many building facades, painting of several facades, replacing awning fabrics where possible, creating sidewalk seating (through enclosures and parkletts),and  installing blade signs for a majority of businesses. Details of the final scope of improvements will be finalized by the end of June; and it is our hope that the actual work will be completed by October, 2011.

The Fillmore Mobile Food Vendor & Artisan Marketplace Programs – Off to a great start!

Orientations for the Fillmore Mobile Food Vendor and the Fillmore Artisan Marketplace Programs began last Thursday, May 19. There was a significant turnout for information regarding these two programs.  The food production and operation workshops for the Mobile Food Vendor Program are being offered by nationally recognized food incubator, La Cocina, and Urban Solutions, a local CBO with expertise in business development and loan packaging services will offer business development classes as well as start-up planning for those individuals interested in selling crafts and hand made products in the Artisan Marketplace, as well as business planning classes for the Mobile Food Vendor program. The workshops will run for twelve weeks, and classes will begin June 2 and are scheduled for Thursdays from 6-8PM at the West Bay Conference Center.

Successful program graduates will receive a certificate of completion and have the opportunity to compete for vending locations on the Gene Suttle Plaza and the Fillmore Farmers Market. Graduates wishing to purchase their own trailers and trucks will be connected with micro lenders, specifically selected to work with program graduates. Western Addition residents (low and moderate income) are the targeted audience for these workshops and the six months of technical assistance to follow, though all are welcome to attend these free workshops.

The next Orientation meeting for both these workshops is scheduled for: Thursday, May 26, 10am -12N at the West Bay Conference Center. Please join us in getting the word out to as many Western Addition residents as possible!
