With a special introduction to the play by noted Bay Area playwright and performing artist extraordinaire, Jeff Raz.

Inspired by Marcus Book’s 50th anniversary as the oldest African-American bookstore in the country, Handful Players commissioned Jeff Raz to write the play, Appetite for Books.  Jeff is the founder of the Clown Conservatory and a lead performing artist with Cirque du Soleil.

The play is filled with movement and music–jazz, gospel, blues, and civil rights songs. A very talented artistic staff has been working with the students for over seven months: Shakiri, Ryan Marchand, and Amy Penney as artistic and musical directors, Tammy Lynne Hall as jazz accompanist, and Louise Jarmilowicz, costume designer.

Handful Players, a free children’s musical theatre program in San Francisco’s Western Addition—“The Fillmore”, is committed to helping San Francisco youth develop critical life skills, discover personal ways for creative expression, develop self-confidence, and gain new cultural awareness and a sense of community.
