This morning, children’s advocates from summer youth programs all over the city crowded into the conference room where the SF Municipal Transportation Agency Board’s Policy & Governance Committee was meeting, urging Muni to approve free group passes for summer programs again this year – a repeat of last summer’s pilot program. We received a warm reception from the members of the committee, who unanimously urged Muni Director Nathaniel Ford to approve the passes.

Ford said yes.

Thank you to Director Ford and to Committee Members Cheryl Brinkman, Jerry Lee and Bruce Oka – and also to Sheila Chung Hagen, Supervisor David Campos’ aide, who came to speak up on behalf of the youth of San Francisco.

And thanks to the youth program directors and advocates who came to speak. Organizations represented were: Bayview Magic, Bayview YMCA, Booker T. Washington Community Center, Mission Beacon/Excel, Mo’ Magic, Oceanview/Merced/Ingleside Beacon, Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, the SMART program, the Summer Learning Network and the Village Project.

MTA Board Member Brinkman said the Muni passes and programs like them are essential “for the health of our city and the future of our kids.”

We’ll keep you posted on when the passes are available. Thanks for your advocacy!
