Young Women’s Health Leadership Summit 2011
Wednesday, March 2
9:00 am to 2:00 pm
South San Francisco Conference Center
255 South Airport Boulevard
South San Francisco, CA 94080
More than 200 young women from 20 San Francisco-area high schools will attend a special summit exploring issues that impact their health and goals — including how to deal with stress, relationship violence, sexuality and birth control, and how to evolve into future leaders.
The Young Women’s Health Leadership Summit (YWHLS), sponsored by the UCSF National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health in collaboration with the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), was developed by a committee of young women for young women.
The 9th annual event includes inspirational speakers and performance art. The conference theme is “Woman in the Mirror: Kindle Your Fire, Dream and Inspire!”
Innovations in Young Women’s Health Award is a competition in which SFUSD high school students receive up to $2,000 and technical support to create and implement school-based projects that promote women’s health and wellness. This year’s winning projects range from plays that confront transgender phobia to deejaying workshops meant to encourage self expression. Student leaders will give a brief presentation on their projects at the conference.
About the Summit:
The Young Women’s Health Leadership Summit (YWHLS) is sponsored by the UCSF National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health in collaboration with the San Francisco Unified School District. The YWHLS grows out of the successful Young Women’s Health Conference, which convened annually between 2000 and 2006 and then transformed into the YWHLS in 2009.
The goal of the YWHLS is to provide resources and information on a wide range of health topics so that young women are empowered with the knowledge and resources to make wise decisions about their health, well-being and future endeavors. The 2010 summit will feature workshops, an exhibit hall, and a variety of presentations by women who serve as role models through sharing their inspiring stories of success and perseverance.
The theme for the 2010 summit was Unleasing Our Potential, Reaching For The Stars! The event will include a panel of inspirational speakers, performance art, an open mic session where the young women can raise their voices in self-expression, and a keynote speaker encouraging them toward community action.
Our 2011 summit hopes to gather 250 young women from 20 high schools in San Francisco. These young women will represent the diversity and complexity of young women in the Bay Area. Participants come from public, alternative, and charter high schools, as well as community-based organizations that work with young women. The YWHLS not only addresses important health issues that are often not discussed in school, but also provides an inspiring and rare opportunity for young women to be surrounded by so many of their peers and from such a variety of backgrounds.
