Providing affordable, quality care to improve the health of our members and the communities we serve has been the mission of Kaiser Permanente for over 60 years. In pursuit of this mission and with a focus on preventive care, Kaiser Permanente created Educational Theatre Programs (ETP). ETP’s goal is to improve the mental and physical health of young people, their families, and their communities.
ETP’s innovative approach to health education uses live theatre to engage and encourage young people to make better decisions about their health. This interactive approach captures students’ attention while creating an emotional connection that makes these vital health issues real to them. Live theatre enables students to identify and emotionally engage with characters onstage, as well as learn information in a dynamic way.
ETP programs are performed and led by youthful, professional performer/educators who reflect the cultural diversity of the communities we serve and are trained extensively in health education. In addition, our programs include popular music and vernacular which engage students and allow them to imagine themselves within the context of our plays.
ETP has been providing health information through the engaging medium of live theatre for over 20 years. We have found it to be an effective and inspiring way to help children, teens, and adults make informed decisions about their health and to build stronger, healthier communities.
