Approximately one in five high school girls has been
physically or sexually abused by a dating partner.

Over 54% of high school students report
Dating Violence as a problem among their peers.

May/21/2010 2010 Summer Youth Employment (SYEP)

The Office of Economic and Workforce Development announces its 2010 Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP).  SYEP offers paid work experiences for youth ages 17-24 who live in San Francisco.  Youth will be placed at public, non-profit or private organizations where they will gain hands-on experience in a variety of careers and industries.  Through partnerships with six community based organizations, youth will also receive paid work readiness training where participants will have opportunities to develop the skills necessary for entering today’s workforce.

SYEP program dates are from June 14, 2010 through August 9, 2010.

Applications for SYEP are available NOW at www.hiresfyouth.com/syep.  To submit an application, youth must call an SYEP certifying agency for an appointment. Certifying agency information is located in the application packet.  The application deadline is Friday, May 28, 2010. Positions are limited, so encourage any interested youth to apply as soon as possible.

May/21/2010 Free NERT preparedness and response training by the San Francisco Fire Department

This program provides instructor lead classroom training with hands on components included to prepare San Franciscans for a disaster no matter how big or small.  Earthquake? Power Outage? Flooding on Shotwell Street?  This all hazards approach begins with caring for oneself and family and includes training to become a volunteer emergency responder in your neighborhood.

New NERT classes are coming up and people should take the training that best fits their schedule.  People can join their neighborhood team upon completion of the training.  Participants should plan to attend all sessions of the training to gain the full scope and benefit.  New students may begin no later than the 2nd week of a six week class and must begin on the 1st day of a two day intensive class.

This year we will expand our partnership to include a science, reading and art instructor. These instructors will visit various sites and work with students in the respective areas. Below are the summer schedules for weekly activities, art and literacy.
